Wednesday November 20th, 2024
6pm-7pm
English presentation

When people think of dental knowledge helping justice, usually the first thing that comes to mind is human identification through dental records and, after some remarkable cases, like Ted Bundy’s, bitemarks analyses are also remembered. However, the work of the Forensic Dentist in Brazil goes far beyond that and this profession is able to contribute in many more fields of justice. In this presentation, I will detail the long journey to become a Forensic Dentist, from the initial phases of the process, like the objective exam and essay, until the final steps, like the psychological test and medical exams. I will also describe the exams made by this professional and how s/he can contribute to different areas like Forensic Anthropology, Forensic Traumatology and DNA collection.

André Marquim holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Odontology from the Faculty of Odontology at the University of Pernambuco and works as a Forensic Dentist for the Departamento de Polícia Técnica da Bahia, an official police career, using his knowledge to help justice. He is also currently a Master’s Degree candidate in the Graduate Program in Forensic Sciences at the Univeristy of Pernambuco, with a research project entitled “The performance of the DRNNAGE software for the age estimation in identified human skeletons from the Brazilian Northeast”, in which he is testing a new free tool for adult age at death estimation.
